Who doesn’t dream of learning Italian while meandering through the narrow streets of Rome? I have wanted to learn Italian for a long time, and have found the next best thing to immersion in Italy.  The only downside is the lack of gelati and art, but it will have to do until we can travel again.

TUTORINO is an Italian language school based out of Toronto, but they have cleverly devised a way to reach people all over the world.  Private lessons are set up with one of their tutors on SKYPE.  (They call it Skyperino.) I emailed the director (Pino) my requests about what kind of tutor I wanted,  and he promptly set me up with Luna.  Luna called me on Skype, and we had a 30 minute introductory session to determine whether we were well suited to each other.  I lucked out.   We “meet” once a week at an agreed upon time.  The hour goes by quickly.

THE COST: At $20 an hour, I think it’s quite reasonable for a private lesson.  TUTORINO has a Paypal account, which makes payment a snap.

TIP:  Invest in the tutor’s recommended textbook, or use Tutorino’s recommended websites to learn grammar and conversation.  The trick is to keep up on your own between tutoring sessions, so you can practice skills with the tutor.
