Project #2: Take the kids to the opera?

Last night (Sunday), we took the three kids ages 10,8,5 to a hilarious spoof on Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” put on by the Cowtown Opera Company in Calgary. The music was original from Mozart’s opera, but the libretto was in English and updated with a 21st century plot.  We all enjoyed the excellent singing and beautiful music.  The kids especially liked the slapstick humour,  the incorporation of Blackberries and navigators, the evil corporate world, and when Tamino calls Pamina “hot.”

This may not be Mozart’s authentic opera, but for the kids it was a stimulating and clever presentation of his music (as it was for the adults.)  I don’t think my two younger kids are ready to sit through a full opera, but now they are curious about the differences between the Cowtown version and Mozart’s version.  Kids. Curious. About Opera.  Mission accomplished!

Cowtown delivered a fine family outing.  The only issue for us was the 7:30 time on a Sunday.  The two younger kids got really sleepy, and had to leave after intermission.  I’m sure they would have stayed if we would have let them.  My older one refused to leave.  She enjoyed it too much.  Next time I would book an earlier or Friday show.

PROJECT #1 Success Rate:  7.5/10 (because of the late hour.)

DO YOU TAKE YOUR KIDS TO THE OPERA OR TO OTHER CULTURAL EVENTS?

WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR EXPERIENCES!
