Looking for ways your kids can volunteer? Hipkids offers meaningful and convenient opportunities.

By far,  my best hands-on educational experience was volunteering with my  daughters. It was not easy.   I had to search long and hard to find an organization that would allow young kids to volunteer.  I had to pull my kids out of school for a full morning once a month. I didn’t mind, because I thought the values they learned  from hours of peeling hard-boiled eggs and bagging crackers far outweighed one morning in the classroom.  (Sorry, teachers!)  Sometimes, over 1,000 lunches would be delivered to schoolchildren who otherwise would not have eaten lunch that day.

Young children face many obstacles to volunteering: Issues of liability and risk management that arise for agencies, lack of transportation, and lack of availability during school and after-school hours.  Let’s face it:  We all have good intentions when it comes to volunteering, but sometimes music lessons and hockey get in the way. HipKids, part of Hip (Humanity in Practice) in Calgary, makes it easy and convenient.  There are no mandatory hours, and many opportunities can be accomplished at home.  All you need to do is sign up on the  website to receive emails.  Each month HipKids presents a fun project to benefit a specific agency.  The project may be completed at home, and then HipKids will arrange to either pick it up or have you drop it off.   (November is fill-a-sock month to benefit homeless families.)

New this year on HipKids is The Pony Express.” Kids and isolated seniors connect by writing letters.  My daughter is really excited about becoming a pen pal!  I wonder how she’ll take to writing letters in this age of emails.

Do you know of other organizations that enable kids to volunteer at a local, national, or international level? Do you volunteer with your kids?
